Peugeot acronyms explained: what do all those letters mean?

paugeot-acronyms-explained-in-full-what-do-all-those-letters-mean-lBuying a new or used Peugeot in Hampshire and Surrey can be an intimidating process and with all of those many acronyms car manufacturers use, it is no wonder many of us are confused about their meaning. Charters are cheerfully here to help and this list below is intended to clear up some of the confusion when buying a Peugeot. If we haven’t listed something that you need defining, make sure you use our contact form so we can include the acronym in a future revision.

Engine & Transmission acronyms:

How often have we seen an engine model number that states: 1.2 e-VTi 82 Stop & Start EGC. Does this mean anything to anyone? We didn’t think so either. Let us explain:

Petrol and Diesel models are listed as either:

VTi – a petrol engine (VTi stands for Variable Valve Lift and Timing injection)

HDi – a diesel engine (HDi stands for High-pressure direct injection)

eHDi – a diesel engine with start /stop technology. The engine cuts out when the vehicle comes to a standstill (such as at traffic lights) and restarts when the accelerator is depressed. These engines are the most efficient and are often referred to as micro-hybrid technology.

BlueHDi – a diesel engine which provides extremely low carbon emission levels which in turn means that road tax and London congestion charge is kept to a minimum.

FAP – If you drive one of Peugeot’s diesel hybrid engines then it is likely to include a Diesel Particulate filter (DPF/FAP) which reduces the soot coming out of the exhaust by 99.9%. An engine with a FAP designation means it is even kinder to the environment through low exhaust emissions.

THP – a petrol engine that is all about torque (THP – Turbo Haute Pression – English translation: High Pressure Turbo)

VTi (petrol) models are amongst the most powerful options, HDi (diesel) offer a combination of power and economy and eHDi is purely focused on keeping fuel costs down and efficiency up.

HYbrid4 – This engine system is covered in depth in our specially designed HYbrid4 section. It is a diesel engine working in harmony with an electric motor to provide a combined power output of 200bhp whilst keeping carbon emissions and fuel costs low. HYbrid4 is electric motoring done right.

EGS/C – and automatic gearbox with no clutch pedal (EGS stands for Electronic Gearbox system)

ETG6 transmission – an automatic gearbox with no clutch pedal and 6 gears for greater economy (ETG6 stands for Efficient Tronic Gearbox 6).

Manual transmissions are listed as 5 or 6 gears. These models have a clutch pedal for a more traditional driving experience.

The numerical figure in the engine designation refers to the power output of the engine. Therefore 156 refers to 156 BHP (brake horsepower – a more powerful engine).

S&S – this designates a Stop & Start engine. Every time the vehicle comes a complete stop, it will stop the engine, until you want to move and the engine is automatically restarted. This often makes a big impact on the economy of the vehicle. S&S function on each Peugeot can be switched off if not needed.

Peugeot model Trim levels:

Access – The standard trim level available

Access+ – The standard trim level available (with some enhancements depending on model)

Active – The mid range model available (with many features over and above the standard Access and Access+ trim level)

Allure – The high end trim level with many of the features and functions included as standard

Feline – The premium trim level available (model dependant)

Sport – The standard trim level available for the Peugeot RCZ

GT – The premium trim level available for the Peugeot RCZ

R – The racing edition of the Peugeot RCZ (designated RCZ-R)

XY – A limited edition model of the Peugeot 208

GTi – a highly performance tuned edition of the Peugeot 208

GTi Prestige – a premium edition of the iconic Peugeot 208 GTi

Envy – A limited edition trim level of the Peugeot 107

TOP! – A retractable soft top edition of the new Peugeot 108
Technical acronyms:

EMP2 – This is the new modular platform (or chassis) that many new Peugeots are built on. It is lighter in weight than its closest competitor and helps keep running costs down.

G/KM – Carbon emissions are measured in grams per kilometre. Road tax and London Congestion costs are based upon this figure. A car with lower than 100g/km means that it is currently eligible for zero road text and zero London congestion charging. If you want a car that is kind to the environment and your pocket, look for lower carbon emissions.

Euro5/6 – This refers to a European emissions standard for new vehicles produced. Euro 5 (established in September 2009) meant that all vehicles produced will produced with emission limits within certain acceptable guidelines. Euro 6 replaces the Euro 5 standard and is to be put into place in September 2014. Our Peugeots are sold which are already Euro 6 compliant in readiness for this standard so you know that the vehicle you drive is the most efficient and kind to the environment as it could possibly be.

Other Acronyms worth mentioning:

SW – This refers to the estate edition of a model (i.e. Peugeot 308 SW as opposed to the 308 hatchback).
SR This is a special, business-focused version of a vehicle (i.e. the Peugeot 308 SR) which includes an enhanced communications package as well as a choice of highly economical engines. These vehicles are created to ensure the business motorist stays comfortable on the road whilst being fully connected.
